I was in the tasting room/cocktail bar of a distillery the other day and heard this song, and was disappointed to learn that James Lindsey, aka Jay Reatard, died 8 years ago. But he sure as hell made some solid music in the short time he was here.

It’s some interesting stuff. In a weird way, it reminds me of a bizzarro world Mindless Self Indulgence, except someone gave a young Jimmy Euringer a guitar and some distortion pedals instead of a synth.
I’d link an MSI song, but they’re pretty much all NSFW.

I shall look into that, I haven’t heard of them.
I was thinking that Ty Segall may have listened to him a few times, and something else I can’t remember right now

MSI is...different. Someone gave me a mix cd with MSI on it when I was a teenager. It’s not music that I listen to much as an adult, but when I was younger I caught them in concert and it was very energetic. They did a cover of Big Poppa and it was very entertaining.
I can definitely see the Ty Segall comparison.

Here’s a better, and more relevant music recommendation: Superchunk. A little more polished that Jay Reatard but similar driving beat.

It’s also got a bit of Japandroids vibe:

Oh yeah I can see those too, but they’re both more on the angsty rather than punky and garage side. I think I’m hearing more of that because I’ve been listening to a fair amount of surf/garage/punk/lo-fi sort of stuff lately

That’s fair. Angsty describes both of those songs well. Ever listen to The Thermals? Their early stuff has a good lo-fi punk sound to it. This one even has a really cheap music video:

I have not, but I’ll look into them

Sorry for bombarding you with music. It’s 2:40 A.M. here and I should have gone to bed long ago. If you prefer less punk rock sounding lo-fi, you can’t go wrong with any early Mountain Goats. The newer stuff is great too but it’s not lo-fi at all. All Hail West Texas was recorded entirely on an old boombox, and it’s fantastic.

No worries, I’m all for being bombarded with music, but I should also be sleeping. I’m gonna look into all of this stuff more tomorrow when I can blast stuff without waking people up

Good call. I have to be in a lab mixing chemicals in about 5 hours so I too will call it a night. But to get back to your original point, RIP Jay Reatard.
